Grounds Levels at UNC Charlotte

Level 1 – Chancellors Residence

Bissell House hosts many events during the course of the year some of which are hosted in the gardens.

The grounds are maintained year-round by a landscape specialist who performs all aspect of maintenance which includes but not limited to:

Fertilization, pre-emergent, post- emergent, tree and shrub installation, annual bed design and installation, mowing, weed-eating, edging, blowing, aerating, mulching, snow removal and litter control.

Site is visited each day to perform tasks.


Level 1 – Playing Fields

Responsible for maintaining athletic and recreational fields.

UNC Charlotte competes as a Division 1 school in all sports, therefore the crew focuses its attention on each field depending on which sports are “in season”.  These areas are visited and maintained on a daily basis. This area also includes the recent introduction of the football stadium and well as 16.7 acres of artificial turf.

Bermuda 419 fields some of which is over seeded with rye in the fall.  Maintenance duties include: Fertilization, pre-emergent, post- emergent, seeding, aerating, verticutting, top dressing, grooming, mowing, edging, blowing, irrigation management, tree and shrub installation, annual bed design and installation.


Level – 2 to 3 – Residence Life Halls

The Residence Life Buildings have been prioritized with the newer ones normally receiving a level 2 service. This would require fertilization, pre-emergent, post- emergent, tree and shrub installation, annual bed design and installation, mowing, weed-eating, edging, blowing, aerating, mulching, snow removal and litter pick up at the designated frequencies. Older Residence Halls may not receive the same level of frequencies – such as mowings, based on frequency needs overall. They also typically do not have irrigation.


Level 2 – Parking Services

All of the parking decks have trash receptacles which are serviced along with hand picking each level for trash and debris. Stairwells are blown on an as needed basis. The decks that receive the most traffic and require a greater level of maintenance are Union, West, Cone, East, and the worst being the new south village deck which can take up to 2+ hours each day. The North and CRI decks require less maintenance due to them being used less frequently. Grounds services at least 15 Lots and of those Lot 8 & 5 & 25 7 SMU are the heaviest with trash. The lots are all hand-picked isle to isle. Frequency is once per day.


Level 2 - Student Union

The grounds are maintained year round by a landscape specialist who performs all aspect of maintenance which includes but not limited to, Fertilization, pre-emergent, post- emergent, tree and shrub installation, annual bed design and installation, mowing, weed-eating, edging, blowing, aerating, mulching, snow removal and litter control. Visitation is once per day.


Level 3 – CRI

Roughly - 75% of this area is maintained at a level 3. 

Aerating, fertilizing, pesticide (weed control), irrigation, mowing 7-10 day frequency, shrub and tree maintenance are all performed in these areas.  25% of the area is maintained at a level 5 - This area is “mow, blow, and go” approximately 3 acres.


Level 3 – Perimeter

Roughly - 60% of these areas are maintained at a Level 3 (i.e. FM, front entrance, east deck, and foundation). Maintenance which includes but not limited to Aerating, fertilizing, pesticide application, irrigation, mowing ,snow removal , litter control, shrub and tree maintenance are all performed in these areas. Litter control – several times per week. Mowing frequency can be 10+/- days.                           


Level 3 - Inner / Central Campus

The level of inner campus is an average of Level 3, to maintain this level grounds applies five applications of fertilizer, depending on the area ninety percent is Bermuda which receives two spring apps, two summer apps, and one late summer app. Our Fescue and over seeded areas receive two spring pre-emergent apps, one summer app, one fall app, and one winter app. All turf areas are approximately 15 acres and get mowed 7 to 10+ days, during the growing season. Adequate amount of water is applied to irrigated areas throughout the summer to maintain a healthy turf. Many areas are older areas of Inner / Central Campus and do not have irrigation available. Most beds are pre-emerged every six weeks starting in February through the growing season and germinated weeds are hand pulled and sprayed as needed, frequency 7-10+ days. Mulch is added to bed areas on a yearly basis.
