In addition the above, UNC Charlotte is privileged to have a number of student, faculty and staff clubs and committees that focus in part or whole on community engagement activities involving environmental sustainability. Information on these groups is found below.
In 2004, the Environmental Academy was established. This is a faculty based organization with the mission of sharing information on sustainability research and courses amongst faculty to share experiences and lessons learned. The environmental academy was the primary voice in asking the Chancellor to create a sustainability coordinator position which was done in 2007.
In 2002, students formally established the Earth Club, whose mission is to promote sustainability at UNC Charlotte through activism, education, and social events.
The Charlotte Green Initiative (CGI) was established in the fall of 2008 as the result of a student-led campaign spearheaded by the Earth Club. The CGI consists of an additional student fee of one dollar that full-time students pay each semester for environmentally sustainable projects at UNC Charlotte. The fee is allocated by the Charlotte Green Initiative Committee, a group of student leaders who select projects that will help UNC Charlotte operate in a more sustainable manner.
The Student Government Association appointed its first Secretary for Sustainability in 2007. The duties of this position are to engage students, faculty, and staff in a dialogue about sustainability, work with various departments to help further sustainability initiatives, and to identify areas where sustainability initiatives are needed and pursue them.
