History

 

  • 1990:  Program started by a group of students.  They began by collecting aluminum cans.

  • 1990:  Residents hall recycling began with Witherspoon Hall.  They have the longest running organized recycling program on campus which began in 1990!

  • 1992: UNCC hired a full time Recycling Coordinator for the entire campus.

  • 1992: UNCC stepped up recycling in the academic areas, and started a full time paper recycling program.

  • 1992:  The first annual Earth Day was held and sponsored by The Recycling Department.

  • 1996:  The University hired a Crew Team Leader to help organize and supervise the collection workers.

  • 1998:  The Recycling Department participated in its first America Recycles Day.

  • 2000:  Two major programs were started: Organic Composting, and the Move-Out Charity Drive.

  • 2005:  Established construction and demolition recycling.

  • 2005:  The Earth Club was established, advised by members of the Recycling Department.

  • 2008:  Green Fee was passed paving the way for the Charlotte Green Initiative.

  • 2009:  Removed trash cans from the classroom and into the hallway.

  • 2009:  The “Charlotte Green Initiative” was established.

  • 2011:  Removed larger trash cans and replaced with the “mini trash can.”
