Sustainability Spotlight on The Award Winning UNC Charlotte Petroleum replacement Program headed up by Larry Lane Plant Maintenance Supervisor in Facilities.
UNC Charlotte has made significant progress toward reducing the use of petroleum products by investing in infrastructure and investing in alternatively fueled vehicles.
UNC Charlotte has completed the installation of a new fuel farm including a 12,000 gallon E-85 fuel tank, a 12,000 gallon gasoline tank (which will soon be converted to E-10), and a 1,000 gallon diesel tank. The University is investigating the application and use of B-20 Bio-Diesel.
The University is investigating the feasibility of making the fuel farm open to all DOT Motor Fleet vehicles for fueling 24 / 7. UNC Charlotte has invested in 67 Electric Utility Carts for maintenance, housekeeping, and other University personnel for use on the campus. This includes 2, 4 and 15 passenger electric vehicles.
UNC Charlotte now has 20 Flex Fuel (E-85) vehicles and has additional units on order. The new infrastructure will also allow us to fuel our 11 Motor Fleet AFV’s on site.
Since the 2005- 2006 FY UNC Charlotte has realized a 21% reduction in petroleum use within the campus fleet.
This program is headed up by Larry B. Lane (704) 687-2122 or lblane@uncc.edu, Larry is a great source of information and will willingly discuss the program.
