Current Construction Updates

August 2018


This construction report includes projects occurring on campus that will impact the campus community. These projects include new construction, renovation, transportation, and other improvements. Construction projects can impact campus by changing pedestrian, bike and vehicle routes and creating additional activity on and around campus. We are committed to maintaining a safe and accessible campus for our entire community during construction. Please check this site often to see if construction issues affect you.

Construction Updates

Belk Plaza Revitalization
Belk Plaza Revitalization:

Scope:

  • Belk Plaza, located on the oldest part of campus, is the center of campus life. The previous feature, Belk Tower, was demolished for structural concerns and will be revitalized into a plaza for campus use. The plaza will include outdoor seating, lawn space, a fountain, tables, and a performance area. The plaza will be landscaped in an effort to improve pedestrian and bike traffic. This design concept came from public input of the campus community and alumni.

Update:

  • Final inspections and landscaping are in progress. Fencing may be moved around to mobilize sections of the project before opening to the public. Trees and shrubs will be planted later in the fall as weather cools off.

Facilities Operations/Parking Services Complex Construction
Facilities Operations/Parking Services Complex Construction:

Scope:

  • The new Science Building will take the place of both the Facilities Operations and Parking Services buildings currently on campus. Therefore, both of these buildings will be relocated and combined into one building, located across from North Deck. Receiving and Stores will also relocate to a warehouse in this area.

Update:

  • Work is finalizing with site work and the continuation of installing finishes in the office building and warehouse. Occupants will begin moving in September.

University Recreation Center Construction
University Recreation Center:

Scope:

  • The University Recreation Center will provide students the opportunity for physical health and wellness, by creating a 160,000 square foot facility for recreation. The center will include aerobic and weight training rooms, group fitness spaces, multipurpose courts, aquatic facilities, locker rooms, student meeting space and space for intramural sports and other recreational programs.

Update:

  • Work continues with the installation of structural steel framing, concrete floor slabs and exterior walls. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins are still in progress and the installation of the roof has begun. In the upcoming days, brick work will begin.

Rendering of CRI Entrance
Charlotte Research Institute (CRI) Entrance Improvements:

Scope:

  • The CRI Entrance Improvement project will enhance the aesthetic appeal of this entrance in accordance with the main entrance. The final project will include landscaping, seat walls, pylons, and an illuminated UNC Charlotte sign.

Update:

  • The site is being mobilized and will begin grading in the upcoming weeks.

  • December 2018


Admissions and Visitors Center Construction
Admissions and Visitors Center:

Scope:

  • Located near South Village, the Admissions and Visitors Center will be a hub for visitors and prospective students.  It will serve as an information center, and a starting point for campus tours and student orientation.

Update:

  • Work continues to install the roof, complete interior framing, and continue with mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins.

Academic Complex Renovation
Academic Complex Renovation:

Scope:

  • The Academic Complex, including Macy, Barnard, Denny, Garinger and Winningham, is being renovated to improve functionality and aesthetics. The renovation includes mechanical, electrical and plumbing updates as well as ADA accessibility renovations, structural remediation and interior and exterior upgrades.

Update:

  • Phase II, Macy and Barnard, is complete. Demolition and abatement of Garinger and Winningham has now begun. Work on the surrounding courtyard continues as underground storm water and brick paver sidewalks are installed.

Estimated Completion:

  • Phase I (Denny): Complete
  • Phase II (Macy and Barnard): Complete
  • Phase III (Garinger and Winningham): March 2019
