Current Construction Updates

April 2018


This construction report includes projects occurring on campus that will impact the campus community. These projects include new construction, renovation, transportation, and other improvements. Construction projects can impact campus by changing pedestrian, bike and vehicle routes and creating additional activity on and around campus. We are committed to maintaining a safe and accessible campus for our entire community during construction. Please check this site often to see if construction issues affect you.

Construction Updates

Belk Plaza Construction
Belk Plaza Revitalization:

Scope:

  • Belk Plaza, located on the oldest part of campus, is the center of campus life. The previous feature, Belk Tower, was demolished for structural concerns and will be revitalized into a plaza for campus use. The plaza will include outdoor seating, lawn space, a fountain, tables, and a performance area. The plaza will be landscaped in an effort to improve pedestrian and bike traffic. This design concept came from public input of the campus community and alumni.

Update:

  • Site demolition and installation of underground utilities continues. Footings have been placed for the new seat walls. Work will begin on the water feature later this month.

Admissions and Visitors Center Construction
Admissions and Visitors Center:

Scope:

  • Located near South Village, the Admissions and Visitors Center will be a hub for visitors and prospective students.  It will serve as an information center, and a starting point for campus tours and student orientation.

Update:

  • Earthwork continues on site. Installation of site utilities and foundations is in process.

University Recreation Center Construction
University Recreation Center:

Scope:

  • The University Recreation Center will provide students the opportunity for physical health and wellness, by creating a 160,000 square foot facility for recreation. The center will include aerobic and weight training rooms, group fitness spaces, multipurpose courts, aquatic facilities, locker rooms, student meeting space and space for intramural sports and other recreational programs.

Update:

  • Retaining walls, foundations and first floor concrete columns are complete. Under slab rough-in work, installation of slab on grade, installation of structural steel and installation of post tension slab work continues. The pool vault has been placed and under slab piping work associated with the pool is underway.

Union Deck Construction
Student Union Deck Expansion:

Scope:

  • The expansion of Union Deck will provide 600-700 additional parking spaces available to the University to make up for the loss of Parking Lot 19, as it was demolished to build the University Recreation Center.

Update:

  • All levels of the deck have been poured. Construction continues with electrical rough-ins, plumbing and masonry.

Facilities Operations/Parking Services Complex Construction
Facilities Operations/Parking Services Complex Construction:

Scope:

  • The new Science Building will take the place of both the Facilities Operations and Parking Services buildings currently on campus. Therefore, both of these buildings will be relocated and combined into one building, located across from North Deck. Receiving and Stores will also relocate to a warehouse in this area.

Update:

  • Installation of site utilities and appurtenances continues. Structural steel and roofing for the warehouse is in progress. In the next month, work will continue to complete the roof panels and drywall installation for the office/shop building.

Scott Hall Construction
Scott Hall Renovation:

Scope:

  • Originally built in 1969, Scott Hall is being renovated to update the mechanical, electrical, information technology and plumbing systems. Window and roof replacements are included in the renovation, as well as ADA modifications.

Update:

  • Work will continue on HVAC, interior painting, exterior repairs, window installation, masonry, drywall installation, ceiling grid and light fixture installation, and flooring. Elevators are now installed.

June 2018



Academic Complex Renovation
Academic Complex Renovation:

Scope:

  • The Academic Complex, including Macy, Barnard, Denny, Garinger and Winningham, is being renovated to improve functionality and aesthetics. The renovation includes mechanical, electrical and plumbing updates as well as ADA accessibility renovations, structural remediation and interior and exterior upgrades.

Update:

  • Macy and Barnard are continuing mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins and window and lighting installation. Barnard is behind schedule compared to Macy.

Estimated Completion:

  • Phase I (Denny): Complete
  • Phase II (Macy and Barnard): August 2018
  • Phase III (Garinger and Winningham): January 2019
