November 2016

Construction projects will have impacts on campus, including changing pedestrian, bike, and vehicle routes and creating additional activity on and around campus.  We are committed to maintaining a safe and accessible campus for our entire community during construction.  Please check this site often to see if construction issues affect you.

Construction Updates

RENOVATION - Elm/Maple/Pine Halls:

The student residence building, which was built in 1987, will receive an update to its mechanical, electrical, information technology, and plumbing systems as well as interior modernizations.

The project will also include window and roof replacements and ADA modifications to meet existing code requirements. There will be substantial site work to include new underground HW/CW lines from the   recently construction Oak Hall Utility plant and other site amenities
to include retaining walls, walkways, and paving.

Update Continued demolition of rooms in Pine and Elm, clearing the site, and installation of underground utilities. Demolition of Maple Stair Tower and window removal.
Estimated Completion  July 2017


Belk Track
RENOVATION - Irwin Belk Track Resurfacing:
Scope The project is to remove all existing track surface, mill the underlying asphalt base, and install a new surface.  A new drainage around the track, some new fencing, and extending the pole vault landing is also included.
Update The track striping was complete at the end of October.  The logo should be completed soon.

Levine Hall
CONSTRUCTION - Residence Hall Phase 14:

Formally named Levine Hall, this five story residence hall is located near the campus main entrance on University City Boulevard.  At approximately 160,000 sq. ft., it will house 435 students.

Offices for the university's Honors and Levine Scholars programs will be housed in two floors south of the archway.  Program participants will have the opportunity to live in the residence hall.

Update Interior and exterior finishes are wrapping up.  Interior and exterior punch list inspections are in progress, and building systems are being tested.

RENOVATION - Campus-Wide Elevator Upgrade Projects:

Scope:  This project will consist of the modernization of elevators in Friday, Colvard, Atkins, King, Smith, Barnard, Garinger, Kennedy, Cameron, and Cone as well as enlargement of the Cone South elevator.  

During construction, the elevators will be taken offline.  The schedule of the upfits is:

Light rail construction area
TRANSPORTATION - Light Rail LYNX Blue Line Extension:

The new light rail Blue Line Extension construction continues up North Tryon toward campus, while earthwork, track bed, and station work continues on campus.

Challenging traffic conditions along North Tryon between Old Concord Road and Institute Circle will continue.  The track bed portion of the civil work between Old Concord Road and Harris Boulevard has been turned over to the Track and Systems contractor who will install the rail ties, rails, and rail electrification system, etc.. Temporary lane closures should be expected daily between 9am and 4pm. 

Drivers and pedestrians are continually encouraged to be alert and safe while driving/walking through this area.

Institute Circle reopened on Friday, April 1.  Also effective on April 1, northbound North Tryon Street between JW Clay and Institute Circle will be closed for 30 days.  The intersection of JW Clay will close to left turns for two weeks on May 15.

Installation of Campus Station plaza is starting up, and campus station sculpture will be installed in December. Landscaping along the North Tryon corridor will begin late fall.  Installation of lighting along the corridor will begin early next year.  Final paving along North Tryon Street will occur next spring.  Installation of crossing gates will close intersections to cross traffic for 2 week periods, and this will occur in a staggered fashion.

TRANSPORTATION - Other Internal projects:
Overview In addition to the Phillips Road Realignment currently underway, the University is planning a number of other infrastructure projects to provide long-term benefits for vehicular and pedestrian flow. Each red dot on the campus map shows the location of each project. Several construction initiatives will continue to add or enhance roadways, sidewalks, bike lanes and ADA access.
